Sylo is reimagining the way data and assets work together. Built on The Root Network, the hub for interoperability in the open metaverse, Sylo is an infrastructure layer for data, powering interoperability for assets and users throughout the open metaverse.

Sylo’s infrastructure drives interoperability of data profiles, networks, things and events. Delivered by the Seeker Network, a layer 2 where the Sylo protocols run and are powered by the SYLO token.

Sylo’s protocols are already in use across many of the games and experiences being produced by Futureverse. The Sylo protocol is currently being used within The Root Network’s Asset Register and Sylo Graph tools.

As we broaden the capabilities of Sylo, we have crafted a clear vision for our main objectives.

TRN Outage Incident Report 2023-10-18

Summary

At 09:36 on October 18, 2023, The Root Network Mainnet runtime was updated to v4.42.0 in part of a series of planned updates to take The Root Network from Alpha to Beta stage. Ten minutes later, The Root Network Mainnet stopped producing blocks. Our internal monitoring tools picked up on the outage and the TRN Core Team came together to troubleshoot the issue. The root cause of the outage was identified as a Memory Leak issue, which caused validators to run out of memory and fail. Once this Memory Leak issue was resolved a subsequent issue was discovered resulting from the outages. This issue meant the Root Mainnet was unable to synchronise. This synchronisation issue has been experienced by other substrate based chains such as Kusama. To help the network resynchronise the Time Warp technique was implemented to resynchronise the chain.

As the number of services running on The Root Network Mainnet at present is minimal, we attempted to identify and resolve the outage as quickly as possible before making a public statement. However, as it became apparent we would not be able to resolve the outage quickly and without incident, we published an announcement to both our core community on Discord, and our wider community on X. We continued to provide updates whenever relevant through Discord over the entire course of the outage.

We acknowledge that while this was an unfortunate incident that no one plans to experience, it was also a great opportunity to learn how we can implement best practices and improve our overall network reliability. As we are still working through the Alpha stage of The Root Network rollout, we are often moving faster than we would if The Root Network was progressed to the next stage (BETA). As we move into the public Beta and eventual full rollout of TRN things like including longer periods of new patches soaking on Testnet will help to mitigate any risk of future outages.

For more detailed information, please see the Main Issues and Response Timeline below. Once again, we thank you all for your support and patience while we resolved this incident and continue to work through these early release stages of The Root Network.

Main Issues

Memory Leak Issue

Cause
The PR #692, which is part of the 4.42.0 release, had a flaw in the clearing storage logic which caused the validators to loop through a significant amount of storage reading operations and ultimately ran out of memory when trying to process an XRPL bridging transaction.

Fix
A patch was applied to all mainnet validators in a sandboxed environment, allowing them to produce the next block (block 8260345).

Epoch Change Issue

Cause
Root Mainnet was unable to continue producing the next block (after 8260344) once the memory leak issue was addressed with an error

Fix
A patch was applied to all mainnet validators in a sandboxed environment to produce blocks at higher rate to catch up. The technique is called Time Warping

UPDATE

The Root Network has now been fully synced and is producing new blocks the team will now work on bringing the services and applications online. We appreciate your patience while we took our time to work through the root causes to resolve this bug during our ALPHA phase. The team will prepare an incident report on our learnings. Now that we have successfully made the updates we look forward to the new applications joining The Root Network and the network BETA phase with further community participation in decentralization.

UPDATE

We have found the root (heh) cause of the issue which is causing CPU and Memory to spike on nodes which impacts their ability to produce new blocks. We have designed a solution to resolve this and bring the services impacted back online. The team is currently implementing and testing this and we will have an update in a few hours.

While this is an unfortunate situation, it is not entirely unexpected during ALPHA The Root Network is certainly not the only chain to have experienced an outage like this during their ALPHA and BETA phases. We are confident we will have it resolved promptly. We did not see the issue in the testnet deployment as it took some time to materialise, but in BETA and beyond we would have likely picked this up in our testnet phase since as we would run updates for an extended period on testnet before deploying to mainnet than we currently do in ALPHA.

As the big techs often say, move fast and break things is often the best way to go in these early phases and that’s why we are still in ALPHA.

This is the new home for all things infrastructure, protocols, and tokenomics for The Root Network, developed by Futureverse.

You can also use this section to hide channels that you’re not interested in, removing clutter from your experience.

We’ve also made the most of the new Discord forums feature. FuturePass Update

@everyone the first FuturePass optimization begins tomorrow. We’re updating FuturePass from an EVM-based implementation to a built-in native component of The Root Network. This update will deliver cheaper gas fees and security improvements.

The native integration will also mean that your existing FuturePass address will change to a new number. You will see this when using experiences with FuturePass integrated, such as Gods & Goblins, The Next Legends, ATEM, the Underground, the FuturePass dashboard, and more to come.

This new format ensures FuturePass addresses are easily identified in your wallet.

To complete this update, FuturePass will go into maintenance mode for an estimated 5 hours from (Tues 2pm PT / Wed 9am NZT). During this time, you will not be able to access FuturePass via the website, or experiences with FuturePass integrated.

1. Do I have to do anything?
   No, this update will be completed automatically. This is just to inform you of the changes.




2. Which experiences will be affected by the maintenance?

   Your old FuturePass address is still valid. However, if you send something to your old address, you won’t be able to access it on your dashboard.
   If, in the near future once the transfer function is live, if you accidentally send something to your old account, please log a ticket in Discord. We will rerun the migration and send the assets to your new FuturePass account.




4. Does this affect my ETH wallet address?
   No, this only impacts your FuturePass address.




5. How long will the maintenance last?
   We estimate that maintenance will take 5 hours, and will keep you posted on any deviation from this timeline.




6. Does this allow us to merge multiple wallets into one FuturePass account?
   Not yet, but that feature is currently in development.

Today, we’re proud to announce our ecosystem-wide roll-up is complete. Together officially now as Futureverse, we’re in the best position to deliver on our mission to empower the next generation of creators through a world-class open metaverse infrastructure and rich content experiences.

This process is one that wouldn’t have been possible without the diligent work of our team, the patience of our community, and the shared belief in what we’re building together. Thank you to everyone for bearing with us through this period, and we can’t wait for the exciting next chapter ahead.

Bringing 11 separate companies together into a single organisation is a complex task, to say the least. With these organisations of varying sizes, overlapping departments have been consolidated to optimise our productivity and efficiency. We are also shifting our focus to the next phase of our plan; moving from creating characters and content, to activating content in applications, experiences and networks, while simultaneously scaling our users and enabling our community to become creators. As can be expected, this has meant the unfortunate loss of some staff from the respective entities who came together. This is a difficult process for all involved; however, it is essential to ensure we are well-placed to scale and bring the Futureverse technology to the world.
