Girls Who Code is on a mission to close the gender gap in technology, and are leading the movement to inspire, educate and equip students who identify as girls or nonbinary with the computing skills needed to pursue 21st-century opportunities. Since launching in 2012, Girls Who Code has served 500,000 students through in-person and virtual programming, and 115,000 of their alumni are college or career-aged.

QISSA is coming
Dear Women Rise fam,
We've been teasing you over the last couple of days - so now it’s time to share the news.
We are THRILLED to say we will be launching QISSA on Thursday 5th January!!!
What is QISSA? QISSA, meaning 'story' in Urdu, will embrace the power of art for storytelling to amplify diverse voices of women and girls from around the world.
Diverse stories of excellence and joy from various parts of the world are often left untold and when they do get recognition in the media, they are often presented in a negative light. This creates misrepresentation of cultures, countries and communities.
We want to continue the work of celebrating women that I began through my art and books. In my second book, Rise, I wrote; “Growing up, I rarely came across positive stories of women who looked like me or who I could identify with, culturally or otherwise. I wanted to create Rise so that other women of colour could find themselves in a book. I wanted to honour these incredible female scientists, activists, leaders, and artists who have worked both behind the scenes and under public scrutiny to make the world a better place.”
This is the motivation with which we are starting QISSA - to take back control of our own narrative.
QISSA will celebrate and represent women in the arts, sciences, sports, activism, Web3 and the Metaverse, as well as spread awareness about girls’ education and women’s rights in line with Women Rise’s mission.

Welcoming new team member
We're beyond excited to introduce our community to the latest member of our growing team, Cassie Lawrence.
@CassieL is the Content Editor for our new upcoming Qissa platform. She has always been passionate about sharing stories from around the world and has worked for various literary organisations with a global outlook, including Wasafiri, Saqi Books and Asia House. Alongside her work she has volunteered for free-speech advocates English PEN and literature site, Asymptote Journal, among others.
She has been working behind the scenes with the team for months to develop Qissa and can't wait to share the incredible stories with the world. Cassie will be representing Women Rise at NFT NYC London on 4 Nov 2022 where she'll take the stage to talk on the topic "Building Long term Interactions with Mindful NFT Community Building".

📚 Rising Women Club: In conversation with Shabana Basij Rasikh, an amazing activist rising for Afghan Girls' education. I was honoured to have a virtual sit down with Shabana and talk about the state of Afghan girls' education, her own journey of getting an education and how she created SOLA, a girls' boarding school that's one of its kind and relocated to Rwanada during the political turmoil of 2021. SOL Afghanistan was one of the schools we conrtibuted to as part of our roadmap. Shabana is someone that inspired me and we are so excited to share her story through the Women Rise platform soon. We are so excited to share that we will be hosting a NFT storytelling workshop designed by our friends and partners at Jumpcut Media!
A lot has been said about storytelling and NFTs. But HOW do you tell that story? Here at Women Rise, we wanted to bring you this unique opportunity where you will get to learn from talented professionals and storytellers who have worked in Hollywood with Netflix, Disney+, etc!
This is an incredible opportunity for anyone interested in creative writing and storytelling. The workshop theme will be telling your Women Rise PFP stories, and you will learn how to create a compelling character and write a resonant backstory. Voice HQ x Women Rise
Dear Women Rise fam,
We carried out an exceptional artist residency alongside Voice HQ as part of one of our initiatives under our Rising Women Club. ✨❤️
To change the statistics of female artists in the NFT and art world and to empower female NFT creators, Voice partnered with Maliha. Together, they created the Voice x Women Rise program, which supports women creators from underrepresented and marginalized communities.
This artist residency exceeded all our expectations because not only did we discover talented artists from all across the world but we were able to support their art by giving away grants, supporting them in launching their NFT collections on Voice HQ, and also providing them with mentorship.
NFT evening reported, “In 2022, women remain significantly under-represented and undervalued in museums, galleries, and auction houses. Not only do the top 18 museums in the US have collections that are 87% male and 85% white, but art by female artists is sold 50% less than art by men. In addition, women account for only 16% of the NFT art market and 5% of NFT sales. Spurred by these shocking statistics, NFT marketplace Voice decided to do something to bring about real change. The result? The Voice x Women Rise project”

Today, I have great news. Something I hinted at a few weeks back.
I’m extremely proud to announce that, I as a creator of Women Rise have been selected for INSTAGRAM’s Alpha Cohort for their NFT Digital Collectibles feature.
Adam Mosseri, head of Instagram, announced today, “It is a limited number of people to start with. We wanted to start small and learn from the community.” He further added, “One of the unique opportunities we have is to make web3 technologies [NFTs] accessible to much broader range of people.”
The Alpha Cohort (a group of select creators curated by Instagram) will be supporting Instagram in testing this new cool feature and help them shape this new functionality through providing feedback on the use of this feature and make recommendations for additional features on the platform!
In the coming days you can expect:
-Myself posting Women Rise NFTs on my instagram @malihazart using the new Instagram Digital Collectible feature.
-Instagram announcing the members of the Alpha Cohort.
-The content I will post will be a mixture of posts, stories, reels.
-This content will feature Women Rise NFT and will be amplified by Instagram.
-Marketing from Instagram to promote this feature leading to Women Rise NFTs showcased, reaching new audience. ❤️🥰

Vee Con is only a week and a half away so let’s get prepping for it. I am so honoured and grateful to be representing our wonderful community at Vee Con as a speaker.
In addition to the Vee Con itself, we will be hold 2 community events.

We have just launched our 5-piece 1/1 collection that celebrates Black influential women such as Dr Maya Angelou, Josephine Baker, Wangari Maathai, Audre Lorde and Angela Davis.

100% of the proceeds (primary and secondary) from this collection will be going to 5 organisations that are supporting and contributing to Black women owned businesses, Black artists and non-profit orgs working to support Black communities in education, healthcare and mental health.
Organisations include Janet’s List, The Cowrie Culture, Girls on Fire Leaders, CAMFED and IPPF Africa. You may have heard from 3 of these organisations just now on our twitter spaces as they shared their stories on the Women Rise platform.
This is also the beginning of our “Rising Women Club” that we mentioned in our roadmap 1.0. As we move forward, more initiatives will be introduced within this club.

Today we celebrate Wangari Maathai. She was the first African woman to win a Nobel Prize. An environmental activist who dedicated her life to protecting the earth, democracy and advancing human rights. ❤️ She inspires us.

We will kick off things with a twitter space with 3 incredible organisations that we are supporting through this collection. You will be able to hear from these leaders and connect with their stories. twitter spaces will be co-hosted by Women Rise and Rarible.

Four trailblazing female-led projects (Women and Weapons, Women Rise, Boss Beauties, and World of Women) are coming together for one epic event and an unforgettable night!
Say hello to the “Trailblazer: WAW x WR x BB x WOW” event, powered by The Female Quotient and Coinbase.
This is a celebration of what we, as women of web 3, have accomplished together, have built together - all thanks to the support our communities have shown us, so if you really think about it, this is a celebration of our communities!
All four founders (Sara Baumann, Maliha Abidi, Lisa Mayer, and Yam Karkai) will be your hosts.
We have booked a fantastic venue for 400 guests, 100 per community. There will be good food and good company, and you can already imagine that the vibes are about to be immaculate. Because we expect enormous demand for the event and have limited capacity at the venue, we are holding a raffle via premint xyz to randomly select 100 holders from each community to receive tickets. This collection and collaboration have been in works since January and we are finally ready to launch it!
100% of the proceeds (primary and secondary) from this collection will be going to 5 organisations that are supporting and contributing to Black owned businesses, Black artists and non-profit orgs working to support Black communities. The orgs Women Rise has previously partnered with & continues to partner with supports BIPOC (Black, indigenous and people of colour) communities from around the world, but this collection will specifically be launched to create an on-going mechanism within WR that supports several organisations focused on Black communities.
The 1/1 series will be launched as an auction on Rarible! We will also be doing a twitter spaces with some of our partners that are part of this series and are leading these incredible organisations that WR will be contributing to through this initiative. I feel inspired by every woman I am drawing for this series.Dr Maya Angelou’s Still I Rise poem has inspired me for years & was the inspirational behind my 2nd book’s name, RISE: Extraordinary women of color who changed the world.
